Ivory Coast entered the tournament has arguably the pre-tournament favourites after theirm exploits at the 2006 World Cup and the emergence of genuine world stars such as Didier Drogba, Emmanuel Eboué, Yaya Toure, Salomon Kalou, Didier Zokora and Kolo Touré.
They breezed through Group B in the first round, out-playing Nigeria in a 1-0 success thanks to an excellent goal from Kalou, and then powering past Benin with a 4-1 success as Drogba, Yaya Toure, Aruna Dindane and Kader Keïta found the back of the net.
They completed the group phase with a comfortable 3-0 success as Drogba, Marc Zoro and Boubacar Sanogo found themselves on the scoresheet.
But it seemed as if they were just warming up as they overwhelmed Guinea in the quarterfinals, inflicting a humiliating 5-0 defeat on their west African counterparts. Once again the goals were spread about as Kalou netted a brace, to go with goals from Drogba, Keita and Bakari Koné.
But The Elephants looked out of sorts in the semifinal and having found themseves 2-0 down on the hour-mark, Keita netted for what they would have hoped was the start of a comeback.
But two more goals from The Pharaohs handed them a place in the final and the shell-shocked Ivorians fell apart in the second half as they went down 4-2 to the hosts Ghana in the third/fourth-place play-off, Sanogo getting a brace.
