Created in 2007 and first hosted in 2009 in Côte d’Ivoire, the African Nations Championship exclusively features local players.

With the vast majority of the Elephants playing abroad, mainly in Europe, the local Ivoirian national team lacks some international experience. And while Côte d’Ivoire competed in the first two editions of the tournament, at home in 2009 and in Sudan in 2011, they never made it passed the first round.

After their 4-1 defeat in Kaduna against Nigeria in their first leg of the zone West B qualifiers for the 2014 tournament to be hosted by South Africa, the local Elephants will struggle to reach the finals of the third edition of the continental competition.

The team is coached by former USC Bassam technician Norbert Saraka, who took over from Georges Kouadio in October 2012.National League holder Séwé Sport and the Abidjan-based outfits are the biggest providers of players to represent Côte d’Ivoire for the African Nations Championship.
