Liberia have reached the Africa Cup of Nations finals tournament twice, 1996 and 2002. On both occasions they were eliminated in the group phase, though they did at least win their first ever Nations Cup match: a 2-1 victory over Gabon in Durban in 1996.

The Lone Stars are easily the lowest ranked side in Group A of the 2012 AFCON qualifiers, just under 50 places lower down the ladder than Zimbabwe and Cape Verde, and a whopping 101 behind Mali at the time of writing.

Nonetheless, coach Bertalan Bicskei (who was unveiled as Liberia’s coach in early July, 2010) will hope that his side is able to cause an upset or two in the group and look to grow as a team ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Bicskei is a 65-year-old Hungarian who has had a long and varied coaching career. The former goalkeeper has had two spells managing the Hungarian national team and can boast good experience of African football having had three terms at the helm of Egyptian club El-Masry.
