Madagascar have never qualified for an Africa Cup of Nations finals tournament.
Their national team is known by the nickname Barea, which is a species of zebu (a type of domestic cattle) that is depicted on the countrys coat of arms.
Madagascars best win in international football saw them defeat north African heavyweights Egypt 1-0 in the qualifying tournament for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations but, apart from a semifinal appearance in the 2008 Cosafa Cup, they have not managed any other notable achievements.
The islanders team is mostly made up of players who ply their trade in Madagascars domestic game; leagues in the Seychelles, Mauritius and Thailand; as well as some of the lower divisions in France.
Their coach is Jean-Paul Rabier, a 55-year-old Frenchman who has had a wide and varied managerial career that has seen him work in his homeland, Algeria, Qatar and even Japan. He also coached the Burkina Faso national team from 2002 to 2004.
