Mali may have been drawn into a tough group at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, but they came within a whisker of reaching the quarterfinals.
They got off to a good start in Group B as a Fredi Kanoute penalty was enough to see off Benin 1-0, and that was followed by a creditable 0-0 draw with Nigeria.
But the toughest test was still to come as they faced up to pool favourites Cote d'Ivoire and, when a point would have been enough to see them into the Last 8, they went down 3-0 to The Elephants.
It meant they finished level on four points with Nigeria, but out of the running due to their inferior goal-difference.
It was tough on coach Jean-François Jodar's side, but their record of just one goal in three matches would ultimately cost them in the tournament.
