Mauritius failed to qualify for the 2010 World or African Cups, finishing last in their qualifying group (which was won by Cameroon), and picking up only one point from six games.

Their top goal-scorer during the campaign was Wesley Marquette, who netted twice. The island nation has in fact only once reached the finals of a major tournament, when they participated in the 1974 African Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated after the first round.

At present, Mauritius find themselves way down the FIFA rankings in 183rd position, the worst spot they have occupied in their international history; the best being 116th.

The national team is made up mainly of players who participate in the local league – known as the Barclays Premier League, comprising of 11 clubs.

The league has been in existence since 1935 and the most successful clubs in its history are Fire Brigade SC and FC Dodo, both of whom have won 13 titles. The current champions are Curepipe Starlight.
