Gambia will be appearing at just their second African Youth Championships after a maiden appearance in 2007 in which they finished third.
That 2007 showing was based on a victory by their Under-17 side in the CAF Under-17 Championships two years previously in 2005, and history has repeated itself again.
The country were victorious in the 2009 CAF Under-17 Championships in 2009 and now two year later, that team has matured to qualify for the Under-20 tournament.
Pooled with Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon, it is difficult to see how Gambia will get out of the group, but the side has shown enough fighting spirit in the past to beat expectations.
The build-up top the tournament has not been without controversy for the side after coach Lamin Sarr left out two key players in the form of Kemo Fatty of the Seaview club and Samger striker Buba Jallow, much to the dismay of fans.
Atletico Madrids youngster Ousman Jarju, Real Zaragozas Saihou Gassama who also skippers the side and Le Mans Alieu Darboe are the big names of the squad.
They have the ability to surprise, but their pool could not have been tougher.
