Niger, with a population of around 12 million, and a status as one of the poorest countries in the world, have never reached the World Cup or the African Cup of Nations finals.
At present Niger are ranked 163rd on the FIFA rankings list, having slipped down the rankings after a poor showing during the 2010 World and African Cup qualifiers, where they finished last in a group including Benin, Angola and Uganda, with a single win all to show from their six matches. Their top goal scorer in the campaign was Issoufou Alhassane, who netted twice.
Considered to be one of the minnows of African football, Niger’s cause is not helped by the fact that none of their international players participate in European club football.

The local league – the Championnat national de Première Division, has been running since 1965, although its structure has change several times. The present structure sees the league divided into several groups, with the winners of those groups coming together in the second half of the season to compete in a ‘Super League’.

Historically, Sahel FC and Olympic FC (both from the capital Niamey), are the most successful clubs, with 12 and 11 titles respectively.
