Rwanda, a country in the ascendancy after the horrific genocide of the mid 1990’s, has only once previously qualified for the African Cup of Nations’ finals, back in 2004 when they were eliminated after the first round.

The Wasps have struggled to make their mark in Africa in recent years, although in 2008 they had moved up to 78th on the FIFA rankings list.

Now however they have fallen back down to 107 and are unlikely to come close to qualifying for Gambia 2012 unless they can really pull something out of the bag.

The majority of the national team squad play their football at home in the Rwandan Premier League, with just a handful (two in Sweden, one in Belgium and two in Cyprus) of players plying their trade in Europe’s smaller leagues.

The current coach is a Ghanaian – Sellas Tetteh, who has experience as the caretaker coach for the Ghana senior national side, as well as its U-23 team and while it will be a big ask, Tetteh will be hopeful of at least ousting Benin into second position.
