Sierra Leone

Nickname:
Leone Stars
Founded:
1960
Joined FIFA:
1960

The formerly war-torn country of Sierra Leone, with a population of less than seven million people, have never achieved much success in the African Nations Cup.

In fact they have only twice qualified for the finals – back in 1994 and 1996, where they did not advance beyond the first round.

Currently ranked way down the FIFA rankings list (130th), the Leone Stars will certainly be rank outsiders in Group G, and will likely struggle even to obtain a second placed finish.

They will however provide formidable competition at home and can take heart from the fact that in the 2010 Angola qualifiers they beat South Africa at home and drew 0-0 in South Africa, a country they again face for the 2012 qualifiers.

Key to Sierra Leone’s hopes is their striker, and captain, Mohamed Kallon, who is the country’s all-time leading goal-scorer, the former Inter Milan striker having netted 19 goals in 28 games.
