Sudan are arguably the strongest challengers to favourites Ghana in Group I and will certainly be difficult to beat at home.
Coached by Emarotchi Aki, their side is almost exclusively made up of players from the top two clubs in the country, Al Hilal and Al-Merreikh Sudan were amongst the pioneers of early pan-African competition, hosting the very first Africa Cup of Nations, in which they came third.
They were champions on home soil in 1970, their only success to date, and reached two more finals tournaments, but what followed was three decades of frustration as their football fell behind others on the continent.
Their reappearance at the 2008 finals in Ghana were a welcome sight following 32 years in the wilderness, though they failed to make an impact in the competition and did not appear at the 2010 event in Angola.
