Sudan came into the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations with a totally home-based squad, the only one of the 16 participants who did not have a player plying their trade overseas.
It was their first appearance at the continental showpiece in 32 years and that inexperience of big tournaments showed as they bowed out of the tournament without a point or even a goal.
It was a cruel baptism for the players and their coach, Mohamed Abdallah, but it was no doubt the experience gained in this tournament which helped the side reach the final stage of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
The tournament started disastrously for the side as they were a goal down inside the first two minutes of their opener against Zambia as James Chamanga put Chipolopolo ahead. Further goals from Jacob Mulenga and Felix Katongo sealed their fate.
They lost 3-0 to Egypt, Hosny Abd Rabo and Mohamed Aboutrika (two), the goalscorers, and then completed the tournament with yet another 3-0 loss, this time to Cameroon.
Samuel Eto'o scored twice, with Mohammed Khider scoring an unfortunate own goal for Sudan to compound their misery.
