Orlando Pirates

Nickname:
The Buccaneers
Founded:
1937

Orlando Pirates endured a difficult 2009/10 season and failed to break their long, long trophy drought. The Buccaneers could only manage a fifth place finish in the Absa Premiership (after finishing level on points with champions SuperSport United the previous campaign) and suffered disappointment in all of the cup competitions.
Pirates were dumped out of last year’s MTN8 by Ajax Cape Town at the quarterfinal stage and they will be hoping to go much further into the competition this time around.
They have purchased some exciting players, particularly the likes of Clifford Ngobeni and Daine Klate, but they still seem to lack a reliable, proven goal scorer up front and that could yet prove to be a major stumbling block this season.
The Buccaneers have a rich pedigree in the Top Eight, having reached the final 11 times and lifted the trophy on seven occasions. This puts them only behind rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the honour’s list, though they last won the title a full decade ago.
2009/10 league position: 5th 2009
MTN8: Quarterfinalists
Top Eight finals/titles: 11/7
