Orlando Pirates

Nickname:
The Buccaneers
Founded:
1937

Orlando Pirates endured a hugely disappointing 2016/17 season, with the club finishing outside of the top eight of the Absa Premiership log for the first time in PSL history.

The Buccaneers parted ways with Muhsin Ertugral relatively early in the campaign and suffered record 6-1 and 6-0 defeats at the hands of Tshwane giants SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.

In the cup competitions they succumbed early in the MTN8 and then had SuperSport as their nemesis in both the Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup, where the Tshwane side beat them in the semifinals and final respectively.

Swedish coach Kjell Jonevret took over Pirates in February 2017, but his first half-season with the club was a fraught one.

He resigned ahead of the 2017/18 campaign and was replaced by former Uganda coach Milutin Sredojevic, who will have his second spell at the club and is under pressure to return the Buccaneers to the top of the South African game.
