Uganda qualified for their third successive African Nations Champions (CHAN) tournament with wins over Tanzania and Sudan in the qualifiers to book their ticket to Rwanda. The Cranes (the football team gets its name from the Grey Crowned Crane which is the country’s national bird) missed out on the inaugural CHAN tournament in the Ivory Coast, but qualified for successive tournaments hosted in Sudan and South Africa respectively - falling out at the group stages on both occasions. The 1978 African Cup of Nations runners-up have been drawn in group D alongside Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mali. Uganda are coached by Serbian tactician Micho Sredojević. Uganda have won the Cecafa Cup tournament a record 14 times.
