Uganda Cranes last appeared in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978.

Since then the Cranes have been struggling to make it back to Africa’s big stage. They have come close in the last three qualifiers and are hoping perhaps they will make it come 2015 in Morocco.

The Cranes is captained by Kazakhstan-based defender Andrew Mwesigwa and coached by much traveled Serbian Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic. The Cranes have been a formidable side in the East and Central region, where they have been dominant.

Uganda have struggled to get back into the AFCON, but came close in qualifications for the 2013 edition where they tied 1-1 on aggregate with then African champions Zambia, but were unlucky to fall 9-8 in penalties.

In the qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations they again came close, but their barren draw against Kenya in Kampala denied them a chance to make it after Angola won and went through.

The Cranes have also previously qualified for the AFCON in 1976, 1974, 1968, where they bowed out in the first round, and in 1962 where they finished fourth. The second string side has also qualified the the 2011 and 2014 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN).

And Uganda has never qualified to the FIFA World Cup just like any other nation in the Council for East and Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) region.
