Zambia have won the Africa Cup of Nations once in 2012 that they lifted the title in Libreville, Gabon where in 1993 an entire Chipolopolo team en route to Senegal perished in an air crash off the coast Gabonese capital on their way to Dakar to play a 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Chipolopolo had prior to their triumph in Gabon reached the Africa Cup finals twice.

The first was during their debut appearance in 1974 in Egypt where they lost to Zaire (Now DR Congo) 2-0 in a final replay after the initial game had ended 2-2 after extra-time.

It was the first and last time the final was decided using that format.

Exactly twenty years later in 1994, Zambia reached the final again in fairytale fashion with a rebuilt team after the tragedy of 1993 only to lose 2-1 to Nigeria in Tunisia.

On the regional front, Zambia are currently the defending champions of the Cosafa Cup after beating their trans-Zambezi archrivals Zimbabwe 2-0 in the final as hosts of the 2013 tournament.

The win saw them tied on a record equalling four wins with Zimbabwe and they head to 2014 tournament in Botswana this September in search of a record-setting fifth title.

Meanwhile, Zambia have had little success in the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament since finishing third during the inaugural tournament held in Cote d'Ivoire in 2009.

Zambia has subsequently failed to qualify for the 2011 and 2013 CHAN events.

And Zambia has never qualified to the FIFA World Cup since entering their first qualifiers for the 1970 finals.
