The team from Cape Town were a little overshadowed last season after their long term local rivals Ajax were in an enthralling PSL title race.
Nonetheless, despite the lack of interest by spectators, Santos went on about their business as most of have become accustomed to.
The People’s Team are unlikely to lift a league title and are consistent middle of the table performers, and last season was no different.
In a campaign which had its ups and downs, Santos qualified for the MTN8 tournament after finishing eighth on the league standings with 37 points, three behind SuperSport United in seventh place and two in front of ninth placed Free State Stars.
In last season’s top eight tournament they ran into eventual MTN8 winners, Orlando Pirates, in the first round and were beaten 2-1 in a tightly contested affair at the Orlando stadium.
One of Santo’s biggest problems last season was their defence as they conceded a blistering 45 goals in 30 league matches which is poor by any standards. This season they have tried to sure up that department with the signing of the experienced Pere Ariweriyai from AmaZulu and Warren Bishop from MP Black Aces.
They may not have the class across the field, but they certainly do have players who are willing to work hard for each other and could cause an upset in a cup competition as short as the MTN8.
