Algerian side Association Sportive Olympique de Chlef have been surprise qualifiers for the group stages of the 2012 CAF Champions League.
The north Africans defeated more fancied Al-Hilal of Sudan in the second round to join Africas elite in the Last 8 of the competition.
It is just the second time that ASO have competed in the Champions League, having been ousted in the first round in 2009. They will be considered minnows in a Group A that also includes the Tunisian duo of defending champions Esperance and Etoile du Sahel, as well as Sunshine Stars of Nigeria.
The team earned their place in the competition by winning a maiden Algerian Ligue 1 title in the 2010/11 season, the first time in their 65-year history that they have been crowned champions. The only other domestic success for the team was victory in the 2005 Algerian Cup final.
They are coached by Noureddine Saâdi, who has extensive experience having spent the last 20 years in charge of teams from Algeria, Libya and the UAE.
Star of the side is midfielder Mohamed Messaoud, who brings creativity and goals, as well as international striker Mohamed Seguer.
The only other domestic success for the team was victory in the 2005 Algerian Cup final.
The city of Chlef is some 200 kilometers from the Algerian capital of Algiers.
