SuperSport United’s participation in the 2011 MTN8 represents their 11th successive appearance in South Africa’s top eight knockout competition, a testament to their consistency in league football over the past decade.
However, they have won competition just once – 2004, when they famously beat Kaizer Chiefs in the final – despite reaching three successive finals between 2004 and 2006 when they had fashioned themselves as something of a ‘cup specialist’ team.
Since MTN took over the title rights to the competition in 2008, Matsatsantsa have barely figured as far as challenging for the trophy is concerned.
They were knocked out of the ’08 competition at the semifinal stage by cross town Mamelodi Sundowns and in the last two editions they failed to get past the quarterfinals despite entering the draw as reigning league champions.
Last season’s league campaign was a major disappointment for SuperSport and coach Gavin Hunt, who were never in the running for the title despite winning the three previous championships on the spin.
They will come into the 2011/12 season looking to re-establish themselves as a force in the PSL, and a refreshing of their squad, which has seen get rid of the deadwood and bring in a good blend of youth and experience (such as Nasief Morris and Sibusiso Zuma, who is sadly out with a long term injury) should see them fit and firing for the MTN8.
