The University of Pretoria enter their fourth season in South Africa’s top flight having struggled for form towards the end of the 2014/2015 Premier Soccer League season.

AmaTuks, as they are affectionately known, managed a top eight finish in their debut season in the Absa Premiership, but have struggled ever since with their lack of killer instinct in front of goal emerging as their biggest problem.

As a result the club made it their objective to strengthen in attack with Lennox Bacela, Thabiso Nkoana, Sphmandla Dlamini, Getaneh Kebede joining the club in the off season.

AmaTuks have been very reliant on one or two men to score the bulk of their goals in the past with Mame Niang, Bongani Zungu, Aubrey Ngoma, Geofrey Massa among those to have weighed in heavily with goals over the past three campaigns.

Head coach Sammy Troughton and assistant Selaotse ‘Sly’ Mosala will be hoping the goals will be spread out among the team this term with specific focus on Thabo Mnyamane who emerged as one of the country’s top talents last season, receiving a deserved call-up to the national team.

Troughton and Mosala took over the reins from long term boss Steve Barker – who left for AmaZulu – in November 2014. The pair tasted immediate success, but the club struggled for results towards the end of the season, emerging as possible relegation candidates this season.

Troughton and Mosala have been part of Tuks for many years with the North Ireland born Troughton serving as head coach of the club even before Barker’s spell while Mosala is a former captain of the club.

AmaTuks have established one of the top football academies in the country over the past decade and a half with several players learning their trade at the capital club before going on to enjoy fruitful careers elsewhere.

Andile Jali, Bongani Khumalo, Lerato Chabangu, George Maluleka, Clifford Mulenga, Davies Nkausu among others, passed through the AmaTuks door.

AmaTuks won the National First Division title in 2011/2012 and reached the Nedbank Cup final in 2009, losing to Moroka Swallows.
