AS Real Bamako are appearing in the Confederation Cup for the third time in the last four seasons, having fallen out of the Champions League in the second round after a 4-1 aggregate defeat to Tunisia’s Esperance.
The Malians’ best achievement in CAF competition was reaching the final of the 1966 African Cup of Champions Clubs, where they lost to Stade d’Abidjan.
Real Bamako, formed in 1960, are six-time Malien Premiere Division champions and their most famous past player is the great Salif Keita, who went on to star in France for Saint-Etienne.
